Statement of Intent

Here is our statement of intent. Each/most of us played a part on working on this

(Some of the statement of intent may not be visible due to blog errors, so here a link to it, just in case!)

Statement of Intent

Genre/Sub-genre

Crime

Political Crime Documentary

Reason: Our team members have a great interest and understanding for crime. One of our members has a background in politics and is knowledgeable on crime that is related to the world of politics.

Topic

Attempted assassination at a political rally

Primary Target Audience

Demographic:

  • Age: 30-45

  • Gender: Both (Lean Male)

  • Income: Low-middle

  • Occupation: Jobs including criminal justice, Law Enforcement, Journalists, Politicians

  • Marital Status: any

  • Family Size & Structure: Small-medium sized heterosexual family with children

  • Country: Australia and New Zealand

Reason: The proposed idea of the event takes place in Australia where the National Party (leading opposition party) holds a national rally ahead of a general election. Most people who tend to take an interest in politics are people of a more mature age range whose lives are directly affected by the routine works of politicians to make the country a better place to live. As the incident takes place in Australia, people in Australia are our target. New Zealanders also take a close interest in Australian politics as New Zealand is dependent on Australia.

Psychographic:

  • Values & Beliefs: conservative and agrarian ideology, any religion (predominantly Christian/Catholic)

  • Lifestyle: people who may live their life solving mysteries and analysing crime

  • Interests: case studies of crime & unsolved mysteries, and untold truths & hidden facts in politics

  • Attitudes: they view crime as an interesting & perhaps entertaining topic to dissent & analyse

  • Motivations: desires to solve the unsolved, and find the hidden truths

  • Behaviour Patterns: they tend to consume news or high stakes real life content

  • Social Class: Low to middle-class

Reason: The reason behind our target being people of agrarian and conservative values are that they are more in line with the policies of the party being represented in the documentary. People of conservative values predominantly come from a Christian, Catholic, or Muslim background as they tend to hold their values near to them and follow the conservative teachings. People who follow the news regularly in the world of politics would also be drawn to watching this as it’s a way of being able to learn more in a video and being able to correlate the information with what they’ve read.

Secondary Target Audience

Demographic:

  • Age: Young adults (18-34)

  • Gender: Both (lean male)

  • Income: Low-middle

Psychographic:

  • Values and Beliefs: Liberal, non-religious/non-practicing

  • Motivations: To use the information for the purposes of activism and protest

  • Attitudes: People who feel negative sentiment towards the people of the conservative side of politics

Reason: This group is increasingly engaged in political discussions and activism, especially through social media. They are likely to be interested in the educational aspect of the documentary, as well as the underlying political issues.

Message (Dominant Reading)

It would show the impact that public political figures can have, and how politics & can be unstable & fragile at times

Reason: The reason is that big public ‘accidents’ like these are a result of political disagreements and/or controversy with political authority figures

Characters

Party leader - Speaker

The central figure delivering the speech at the rally, representing authority and political power. However, he will be shown to be vulnerable after becoming a victim to an assassination attempt.

Generic Radical Conservative Politician:

This character brings the perspective of how a radical conservative politician views the incident with regard to it being plotted by the governing party, and sheds light on the atmosphere leading up to the event.

Generic Moderate Conservative Politician:

This character brings the perspective of how a moderate christian conservative politician views the incident with regard to it being motivated by the hate campaign of the governing party against the National Party leader as well as bringing a message of unity.

Generic Policeman:

This character exposes the inner workings of the way the security and police assessments and briefings addressed the possible incident of an assassination attempt and security measures that were needed to be put in place at the event.

Assassin - Shooter

The antagonist whose actions bring chaos and highlight the theme of political violence.

Representations (groups, places, events)

Groups:

  • White Folks

  • Conservatives

  • Neutral Police and Security

Places:

  • Australia

Events:

  • National Party Convention

Political Parties:

  • National Party

  • Labor Party

Reason: People who tend to support or associate with the National Party of Australia are people on the conservative side of politics which are predominantly white people.

Audience interaction / Engagement

Social Media Campaign: We will engage the audience through platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, showcasing behind-the-scenes content, teasers, and educational snippets of the speech given by the party leader character which is about political violence and its impact. This will build anticipation and create an interactive experience, encouraging viewers to share their thoughts and opinions.

Call to Action: We will incorporate CTAs to encourage viewers to participate in discussions about political safety and the importance of protecting public figures. This can include petitions, donations to the budget of our production, or social media campaigns raising awareness of political violence.

Self-Reflection: This one was fun to write, although we got Carrick to help with some smaller details. That being said when I tried to embed it as an interactable thing in the blog, it was really funky/too small and I couldn't change it, which is a shame because that would have made it feel more proffesional. Right now as I type this, copy pasting it makes it look funky in the actual blog, but you gotta work with what you have I guess... (I'll try to fix it)
