Technical Skills (online)

this is my technical skills blog

Reflection: Not much to say, probably shouldve made this more organized and taken more seriously. There was also so much I did not screenshot even if it fit this page, so sadly I couldn't fill things in here.

Problem:

Not very good size for Statement of Intent prompt/embed.

How I (tried to) fix it at first:

So I followed instructions off of my teacher's blog. Firstly, was to turn my statement of intent into a PDF

Now at first I thought I was supposed to copy the link of the google docs, which wasnt the case, but I did it anyways...

So I instead paste the docs link into the HTML code for the blog, which lead into the error.

[i dont have any images for this problem anymore]

a few days later I fixed things by pasting the code my teacher made and fixed for me into the statement of intent blog, thus it is now working.

Magazine Development (concept ideas) (+ cover research & development)

Here is the development process of my magazine, I will put all of my ideas here and reflect on the decisions I make.

Reflection: This is honestly the fun/creative part of making magazines, the idea generating part. Maybe I should add more on my own time sometimes. I like the aesthetic of simple names such as "PANELS" or "Turn The Page", really eye capturing yet fits the genre theme. Even if I feel like there should be more on a cover, I really like what turned out, and... it was satisfying to see my drawing skills come to life with the main image.

Genre: Comic Book/Superheroes
Sub-Genre: N/A

Name of Magazine:
- MvDC
- BOOM!
- POW!
- WALLOP
- Panels of Paper
- PANELS
- COMIC CON
- Turn The Pages (gave me a new idea for a topic in my magazine)
   - PTO (Please Turn Over)
- Paper Panels
- Super Men
- Super Men and Women
- INDISTRUCTIBLE
- Iron Lads

'PANELS' is one of the two titles im deciding on for my Magazine title. It's literally meaning are the different Panels/Pages in comic books, BUT the connotations it has are the countless and endless amount of comic book pages they could read, when people see this name.

Possible Cover Lines

- Meet the most Marvelous [comic book] charaters!
- Read some of the most DC-astrous fights!
- DC-asterous fights!
- Marvelous characters!
- BOOM and POW everywhere!
- [Insert Comic Book Character here] vs [Insert Comic Book Character here] will be the most insane fight ever!

Images

- A long shot of character who is a total rip off of Iron Man (with the armor and blue blasters when he fly, with him flying towards/on the right of the camera on front of the Non-Diegetic Masthead)
- The background is probably like a city. I also like the idea of it being like very destructed or chaotic like the road in Avengers Infinity War where Iron Man and Dr Strange fought Ebony Maw (yes that is his name).
- mayyyyybbeeeeee the magazine cover could have a few comic book styled bubbles saying things like BOOM or POW

Main Cover

This is probably gonna be easy as I just need to come up with a rip off of Iron Man, and either I draw him or make him myself or ask a friend to draw one for me, then put it on the magazine. And whether I make the art style simplistic or very flashy like comic books, it should be simple enough to make and draw.

tried the classic layout, pretty cool, tried some cool wavy effects for the masthead. third one is kind of cool, first one works alright, second one is funny but bad. I think the first and third is a bit of a tie in quality with me leaning towards the third one better.

I like this layout despite how hard it is to read the masthead, mainly because of how dynamic and creative it is.

Decided to not only stick with this font for the masthead since it fits comic books more, but decided to add this effect to make it stand out a little more.
Changed the affect and don't used for the coverlines since my teacher didn't like the original ones, even if I thought they were ol ,my teacher suggested againts it, so I had to stick with these ones, which aren't half bad.

Here is a barcode I generated on an online bardocde generator in which I don't have a screenshot of

And here's the final and finished product:

Targeting Audiences

Here are some notes I made with a group of classmates to test our Demographic/Psychographic knowledge, particularly with magazines. The notes were digitalized by a classmate of mine.

Reflection: Doing the group activity was fun, even though we didn't get to finish our work as always, one of our group members just LOVED to joke around, and thats probably why couldn't get things done on time, but... that didn't stop me from enjoying what I did. I always love trying to use my newfound media literacy thanks to this class to try and understand the meaning behind the technical elements in every form of media texts, it's just so stimulating towards my mind.

Statement of Intent

This is my Statement of Intent embedded.

Reflection: I probably shouldve added more, but the idea of a magazine about comic books is... unique enough. What was hard though was trying to embed this with the proper size. Despite being in AS Level IT, my coding skills are practically non-existent, so what should've taken a few minutes took me a few days to actually get working, which was also partially due to my bad procrastination habit.

Stuart Hall: Representation Theory

This is a blog to answer some questions my teacher made us answer today; about Stuart Hall's Representation Theory.

2. a. When Media gives something, especially something in reality, their own meaning.

    b. Meaning is something the producer/writer gives to something, and creates a piece of media out of that

    c. A stereotype is a huge generalization of a social group that are created by the media, often represneting what the audience thinks of the majority if not all people part of that social group.

    d. It happens because of two reasons; first because it's easier to use in media and such as most people in the audience already understand these stereotypes unconciously, so the producer can just use stereotypes with hopes and expectations that the audience understands it easily. Secondly, it happens because of a lack of diversity in the production/writing room.

    e. The social groups that are represented in the media are Religion, Gender, Age, Race/Ethnicity, Social Class, LGBTQA+/Sexuality, and ones with Disability.

3.

   SOCIAL GROUP 1:

   a. The social group is Village Farmers

   b. Through different technical elements, they are represented as very goofy and uncivilzed, i.e. they have a wild and unpredictable sense of humor and they often wear poor clothes, and some that I've seen have teeth that are very scruffy and disordered and even yellow, which has connotations of even more uncivilazation. However, they are also seen as not only humble, but also are the most practical people out there. They are not afraid of getting their hands dirty and know how to get things get done, and while it may not seem like it, they are the forefront and foundation of Indonesian society. Examples of technical elements is how they often are shown in outside green sunny and hot areas like fields or buildings in progress. Both enviironments have connotations of outgoing-ness and 'much work to do' kinds of places, which farmers the best.

Magazine Research

This is for my magazine research

Reflection: Ahhh, brings back interesting memories... Of me lying to my teacher and getting in trouble for it. I don't think I ever truly finished it due to the fact I never put stuff like the dropcap and etc...i should finish this at some point... Along with all my other blogs haha... God I have time management issues.

golfasia
[Insert publisher here]

golfasia is a magazine published by [insert publisher here]. It features various golf-related content, most particularly in, as most people wouldn't guess, Asia.

Media Language
Things such as the general colour scheme of the text and the subject in the image being blue white and red is enough to match the whole golf schtick, since... golf also uses the same color scheme. However, another thing that adds to the golf language is the usage of sans-serif font, which is a very simplistic font, the reason this is used is because golf itself is a very simple and not very flashy sport and is rather simple in vibe compared to other sports, so it fits well. The main subject in the image, which is a medium shot of a blonde man holding a trophy in his arms, whilst smiling, could contribute to the gold-related media language as, not only is he wearing blue which as previously mentioned is part of the golf related color scheme, he is holding a trophy. This acsosiation of golf with victory and triumph could attract the audience to golf stuff, as it uses Stuart Hall's Representation theory, as in, it uses various media language to put the guy holding the trophy in a lighter manner.

Representation
As mentioned before, Hall's Representation Theory is used here by putting the blonde man holding a trophy in a triumphant manner. The subject is also an adult white male, which is what the main target audience is for golf, since most golf players, at least from what I've personally seen, is white males. However since it's Asians who are reading this, a white male as the main subject in the image might be used because Asians may look up to white americans when it comes to sports such as golf, so the foreign male subject image may attract the Asians. The use of a medium shot of the male subject, along with the blurring of the background audience, is used to put more focus towards the male subject and show his happy expression in winning the trophy. This media language also attracts the Asian audience somewhat.

Audience
Obviously the masthead means that it attracts an Asian audience, but to be a little more specific, it probably wants to attract the attention of Asians who are, obviously, into golf. Although, according to Uses & Gratification theory, they are also other reasons as to why the audience might consume this magazine. They could use the flashy and entertaining style of the magazine as a form of Diversion, or more sport-expert men might use it as Surveillance to simply see what goes on in current day golf.

Industry
Not much to say here, aside from the obvious. The industry it'll target is sports related, more specifically golf, and the sport places at Asia.

Week 1
We did a review of what we learned in term one by playing some group games together on Monday. Then, on Thursday, We learned about more theories, such as Binary Opposites and other codesand how they are encoded into the story by the author. Our teacher introduced us to the brief for the Magazine project, and it seems interesting not gonna lie. The vocabulary to describe the different features of a magazine all seem a bit difficult to memorize... actually not really, but regardless they seem pretty interesting and fun to learn about it. For as someone as Extroverted as me however, I think I'm gonna choose to do this work alone rather than as a group work, as it sounds more efficient when done alone.

Week Two
We learned about the different types of terminology for Magazine related content, and we also learned about Representation Theory by, if I'm not mistaken, Stuart Hall. Friday, I... was supposed to do my homework for Media Studies using labels, but I didn't manage my time level... even worse I panicked and lied about doing so, which bit me back on my bottom and made me lose a point in Acelios. Of course, I'm not gonna do that again and I will actually complete my work.

Week Three
- Analysed two front covers in detail
- Started a mini-analysis of double page spread
- Took photos of a magazine staill in a shop
Problems: There were a decent amount of problems for me, for one my laptop number keys were not woring so I couldn't write my password and couldnt access all my work through my laptop, so I had to rely on my friend's phone to do my work, however since I needed to
Solution:
To-Do-List:

Week Four
- Genre theory
- Came up with some Magazine Names, Cover Lines, and Cover Lines, along with a very rough idea for what I want for the Main Cover
Problems: I didnt do my hoemwork because it was already so late at night but at least i was direct and honest about it, though i saw my statement of intent in class and it had '-t' in one of the columns, and now im overthinking and doubting about my honesty and dont know if i actually remembered if i finish or not. ah well, its better not to go down that rabbit hole, and at least i finished the bare minimum. also i need to write more text for my magazine development.
Solution: Dont overthink and just do your homework next time.
T-D-L: TBA

Week 5
- The class went into groups and did a gallery walk for each of the Media theories
- Did double page research
Problems: Didn't fully remember all the theories + test tommorow + didnt finish double page spread + didnt bring a magazine with the same genre for my final product
Solutions: Be faster with my work, and manage my time well, take initiative for my final product magazine.
TDL: Study the theories, finish the DPS on my own time, try and find a magazine about comic books if possible.

Week 6
- I began my article for the double page spread of my magazine
- Practiced Section A
Problems: Was admittedly distracted while trying to write the article due to listening to music, thus not working on much.
Solutions: Dont listen to music next time/focus on my work more
TDL: - Get my article done at some point before deadline, maybe on Saturday.

Week 7
- We got and had to answer a class to-do-list for our blogs
Problems: - Didn't finish it
                 - the embed of the statement of intent is not in the correct place
Solutions: - manage my time well and complete my stuff
TDL: - finish checklist
         - put the embed statement of intent in the correct blog

SEMESTER 2

*we had to restart again from week 1 for semester 2 so that its easier to catch up with/count the weeks

Week 1 - We worked on our risk assesments and finally used the location scout photos and checked the risk assesments with those. I hadnt done much actual assesments however as I spent almost 30 minutes trying to get my location scout photos as google drive was being a bit of a jerk to me, not letting me download the images, so I had to find alternatives.

Week 2 - We learned more about Magazine layouts and what kind of stuff you have to consider, such as what stands out, color and type face, etc.. etc..., we also practiced and experimented around with different magazine designs and layouts we could make. We also had our photoshoots in which I took pictures of my classmates Gio and Teja, making them do cool but awkward superhero poses for my magazine's main image.

Week 3 - We worked and experimented on our different magazine layouts and designs, I made a few experimental layout ideas based on the photoshoot images I took of my friends Gio and Teja. It was fun to make different layouts, but I think I need to make more and use various effects that could fit the style of my comic book artstyle. I should also finalize the masthead names. In general I should experiment with the magazine stuff.

Week 4 - We started the basics/foundations required for our Critical Self-Reflection, and while I didn't write anyting too big yet obviously since we have barely started the project, however- FINISH LATER!!!

Week 5 - I've done a rough sketch of my main cover, since mine is uniquely digitally drawn. However realizing this has made me kinda regret making a Comic Book themed magazine due to how hard it is. I might change from hand drawn to just taking pictures of a collection of comic books and then doing some graphic design related stuff for the contents and double page spread. I will try my best to see what I can do with a HD Magazine cover though, since it is a unique idea. I also need improvement for last unit test about Synergy.

WEEK 6 - So our class time was literally cut in more than half, which gave us and especially me a lot of trouble because We need more classme to finish our work but also I was planning to do my math homework during our break, but I realized we have no break time, so now we have less than a whole week to finish this work, I hate that our school weeks were shortened. I have to finish everything by this week.

WEEK 7 - With this being the most stressful, exhausting, and busy week I've had for school, Media was the harbinger of all that. Not only did I have to make a full front cover, double page spread, and contents page in the span of a week or two, I've had so much other stuff going on with my other subjects too. I've had to stay up very late last night just to finish my critical self-reflection, and my cover, DPS, contents are very bare minimum. I tried setting up a schedule/plan as to when I should do my work, but I didn't get follow it. I worked on canva and ibis paint for hours. Now as I am writing this 4 minutes before deadline, my work is either almost finihsed, or finihsed to the bare minimum. Next time I do a project like this, I need to learn to manage my time and set goals/schedules.

Component 1 - Brief

Here is my Brief for Component 1. I have chosen the magazine section.
